Time to be Sleeping

Last weekend I had the pleasure of travelling to Thurso, Scotland for a film premiere of Time to be Sleeping. Why you may ask…well I was lucky enough to be offered the job of developing the Big Box Network website, the producers of the film.

It is a working progress but I think after an afternoon’s work, the result is not too bad. BigBoxNetwork are an artistic bunch so I know that there will be many future iterations ahead – probably entailing Javascript and AJAX 🙂

We are currently using Distrify, a Glasgow based company, for the distribution of the film. It is a little restrictive to our requirements as 1) we don’t supply and trailer and 2) do not want to offer a streaming option but neither of these exclusions seem to be catered for…?

But like I say, it is a working progress and film distribution is a whole new area for me. But BigBoxNetwork will get there in time for their next film release.

Before I conclude, I have to say thanks to Thurso for such a warm welcome. I last made that long journey to the northern tip of Scotland 17 years ago but I was glad that the locals didn’t make me feel guilty about neglecting them! It is a beautiful part of the country.

So if at all interested please download the film.

Adding compiler arguments to mxmlc

The other day I was trying to determine how to add additional compiler arguments in an ANT build file when working with Flex’s mxmlc task. I was surprised to discover that Google was fruitless to my requirements. I therefore thought I needed to rectify this by writing a post!

So if you require to add additional compiler arguments through ANT then you need to use the includes tag as shown in the following snippet:

<target name="buildFlexProject"/>
 <echo message="build MyProj"/>
 <property location="${src.dir}/MyProj" name="MyProj.dir"/>
 <mkdir dir="${stage.air.dir}/MyProj"/>

 <mxmlc file="${MyProj.dir}/src/MyProj.mxml"
  output="${stage.air.dir}/MyProj.swf">

  <source-path path-element="${MyProj.dir}/src"/>

  <compiler.library-path append="true"
   dir="${stage.lib.dir}">
   <include name="*.swc"/>
  </compiler.library-path>

  <compiler.library-path append="true"
   dir="${MyProj.dir}/libs">
   <include name="*.swc"/>
  </compiler.library-path>

  <includes>mx.managers.systemClasses.MarshallingSupport</includes>

 </mxmlc>
</target>

Well done Jump Research

Last week I got the opportunity to develop the website for my future sister-in-law, Louise Fraser. She has just started her own market research company called Jump Research. Check out the site here.

It was great to be back in CSS and HTML – I had so much fun! I want to thank Ruth Cochrane for the amazing designs and ‘opinions’ (the little characters that appear throughout the site).

I now have the opportunity to extend the content to HTML5 and JQuery mobile but at the moment I just want to say – Good luck Louise!
